Celine Dion’s first Las Vegas residency (A New Day) ran from 2003 to 2007, and then for a second time (titled Celine) from 2011 to 2019.

These two concert residencies were all at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace.

A New Day was a revolutionary 90-minute show directed by Franco Dragons which incorporated theatrical performances with song, art, and high-end tech.

Box Office earnings from the show are estimated to be more than $500- $600 million in modern currency. With such massive profits, Celine Dion’s ‘A New Day’ is the most successful concert residency ever.

Her second residency, Celine, began on March 2011 and attracted over 1.74 million guests throughout its run till 2019. Box Office earnings from the show are estimated to be more than $290 million.

A new residency at the Theatre in Resorts World Las Vegas was announced in May 2021, with scheduled dates for 10 performances from November 2021. She was going to grace the stage alongside other legendary artists, including Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Carrie Underwood.

Celine was scheduled to launch Resorts World’s new state-of-the-art theatre and become the first performance before any of the other shows. It was an anticipated special night that never came to happen.

Celine Dion announced before the first show date, on October 19th, 2021, that she wouldn’t be able to debut her new residency due to unforeseen medical complications. Some of the symptoms of her illness included severe and persistent muscle spasms, which prevented her from even participating in ongoing rehearsals.

Despite the setbacks, Celine Dion’s Las Vegas residency has always been a must-see for any fan of her music. Her shows feature her greatest hits and covers of classic songs, all performed with her signature powerful vocals and backed by a full orchestra.

To start off with, how long is Celine Dion’s residency in Las Vegas?

Celine Dion’s Las Vegas at Resorts World was for ten shows a year, making her one of the most sought-after performers in Las Vegas. Her previous contract with Caesars Palace was also for ten shows a year, but she ended up performing far more than that due to popular demand.

A similar case happened during the launch of her Resorts World Residency. Tickets sold out quickly, and the resort saw an extraordinary demand for Celine Dion that they added more show dates for her headlining events.

Tickets for a total of 21 shows went on sale on May 2021. This means that 11 more show dates were added, extending her Resorts World residency from 2021 to 2022. The new 11 show dates spanned from January 19th to February 5th 2022 while previous shows were for November 2021 alone:

  • November 2021: 5, 6, 9, 10, 12, 13, 16, 17, 19, 20
  • January 2022: 19, 21, 22, 25, 26, 28, 29
  • February 2022: 1, 2, 4, 5

This residency was set to mark a new chapter in Celine Dion’s career, and fans expected to be blown away by her show at Resorts World. Tickets for all the shows sold out quickly months before the shows, and the scene was set for the climactic debut.

After Celine Dion’s illness announcement in 2021, the 5th -20th November shows were postponed to January 19th – February 5th, 2022. They also never took place since they were later postponed indefinitely for a second time when Celine’s condition worsened in 2022.

Celine Dion Illness: 2023 – 2024 Update

The symptoms that plagued the artist since 2021 continued to progress, and Celine had to cancel even more shows to attend to her health.

On December 8th, 2022, she announced her diagnosis of Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS), a progressive neurological disorder that affects one in a million people.

The condition affects twice as many females as males, and sadly, scientists do not yet understand the causes behind it. Current research points to causes associated with improper autoimmune responses in the brain and spinal cord.

Some of the symptoms of SPS include stiff muscles in the arms & legs, trouble walking normally, high sensitivity to noise, touch, & emotional distress, which are all linked to causes of frequent muscle spasms.

Revealing to the world on her Instagram page, Celine talks more about her condition, siting how it started from simple spasms to such a rare condition;

“I’ve been dealing with problems with my health for a long time, and it’s been really difficult for me to face these challenges and to talk about everything that I’ve been going through… while we are still learning about this rare condition we now know this is what’s been causing all the spasms I have been having.”

She goes on, “Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to. It hurts me to tell you today that this means I won’t be ready to restart my tour in Europe in February. I always give 100% when I do my shows but my condition is not allowing me to give you that right now.”

Her Europe tour scheduled for February 2023 (now postponed to 2024) was not the only affected show. Her residency at Resorts World has also suffered the most, and as of now, the resort’s website has removed her residency from their list of headliners.

Since there is no known cure for SPS, Celine may currently be under treatment to help manage the symptoms. She may also be taking steps to participate in clinical trials or related research to help cure the disease.

Regardless of her approach to the illness, it is sad to say that we will not be seeing more of her any time soon.
