If you’re heading to Vegas for the first time, packing your case might be a challenge. For example, you might be asking yourself questions about what the weather’s like, what people wear during the day or what to wear for a night in a casino or out on the tiles.
Deciding what to take with you when you head to Vegas doesn’t need to be complicated, but there are a few pointers to bear in mind – so to help you make the right sartorial decisions, in this post we give you the lowdown on what to wear in Vegas.
Outfits to Wear in Vegas Overview
In general, Vegas is a laidback town, and during the day at least, most people wear casual attire – unless they’re planning to go to a show or eat lunch in a more upmarket restaurant.
For men, this means shorts when it’s hot and slacks or jeans when it’s a bit cooler, and you can also wear a t-shirt in warm weather or a casual top or jacket when the temperatures drop.
In terms of footwear, anything you find comfortable is acceptable, including sneakers, sandals or even flip-flops – but remember that you’re likely to do quite a bit of walking, so choose something that won’t cause you any problems in that respect.
For ladies, a casual dress, slacks or a skirt and top are fine, and on your feet, you can wear whatever’s comfortable – although again, be warned that you’ll probably end up doing more walking than you might expect, so avoid anything you won’t want to cover longer distances in.
At night, you’ll probably want to dress up a bit more – after all, if you don’t put on your best gear for a night on the town in Vegas, then when will you?
Your choice of evening outfit will also depend on where you’re going – because casinos and nightclubs all have their own dress codes, something we’ll discuss in more detail later in this post.
And of course, what you wear, either during the day or at night, will also depend very much on the time of year when you choose to visit, so let’s have a look at that now.
What to Wear in Vegas by Season
Although many people might picture Vegas as a scorching hot town in the middle of the desert – and they’d be right if they were only thinking about summer – this is far from the whole picture.
While daytime summer temperatures can be unbearably hot, sometimes reaching 100°F or more, summer nights are often cool.
In winter, on the other hand, days are cold and nights are colder, and you might even occasionally see temperatures drop below freezing.
This means you’ll need to pay attention to what you pack before your trip to Vegas depending on what time of year you plan to visit. So what range of temperatures can you look forward to? And what should you plan on wearing? Let’s look at this now.
What to Wear in Spring – March, April, May
In terms of weather, spring is one of the best times to visit Vegas since the daytime temperatures are comfortable, and the evenings aren’t too cold.
This means for men, casual long pants such as jeans or slacks are ideal, along with a light long-sleeve top.
You’ll want to take a warmer sweater and a jacket for the evenings when it can still be a bit chilly, especially during the earlier part of this season.
However, it’s also a good idea to pack a pair of shorts or two and a couple of t-shirts in case the weather is warmer than usual during the day, especially toward the end of spring when the summer months are approaching.
For ladies, it’s a similar story. During the day, slacks or jeans with a moderately warm top are ideal, or you can go for a longer dress. In the evenings, a warmer top or jacket is essential for when the temperatures begin to drop.
Spring average maximum and minimum temperatures
- March – Max 71.1°F, Min 50.5°F
- April – Max 78.5°F, Min 56.9°F
- May – Max 88.5°F, Min 66.1°F
What to Wear in Summer – June, July August
The summer months in Vegas are hot by almost any standard, so any time you’ll be spending outside of air-conditioned resorts and away from the pools, you’ll want to wear clothes that will help you stay cool.
For men, during the day, shorts and t-shirts or short-sleeved shirts are the best options, and for the evenings, jeans or slacks are a good choice. Make sure you take a warmer top or a light jacket since the evenings can still be cool.
For ladies, lighter dresses or skirts are perfect. Light short-sleeved tops are also good for during the day, but you’ll want a warmer top or a jacket for the cooler evening weather.
Summer average maximum and minimum temperatures
- June – Max 99.4°F, Min 75.8°F
- July – Max 104.5°F, Min 82.0°F
- August – Max 102.8°F, Min 80.6°F
What to Wear in Fall – September, October, November
The temperatures in fall are essentially the same as in spring, so the advice about what to wear is also the same.
In September, at the start of fall, pack mainly lighter clothes – but the closer you get to December, the warmer the clothes you’ll want to wear.
Fall average maximum and minimum temperatures
- September – Max 94.9°F, Min 72.4°F
- October – Max 81.2°F, Min 59.6°F
- November – Max 67.1°F, Min 47.3°F
What to Wear in Winter – December, January, February
To some people, the cold temperatures of the Vegas winter can come as a surprise, so to avoid being caught out, you should pack clothing that’s going to keep you warm.
Even during the day, it’s rare for temperatures to be warm enough for shorts and t-shirts, so for men, plan on wearing long pants like slacks or jeans. You’ll also want a warm top such as a sweater, and you’ll need a jacket in case the temperatures drop.
At night, you’ll definitely need a warm jacket, and depending on how sensitive you are to the cold, you may even think about taking a woolly hat and gloves.
Ladies will also want to choose clothes designed to keep them warm during the Vegas winter. Slacks or jeans are ideal, along with warm tops and jackets.
In the evenings, you’ll want extra clothes to keep you warm for whenever you’re going to be outside for longer periods.
For both men and women, the trick is to wear layers – so you can take them off or put them back on as you move between indoor and outdoor locations with varying temperatures.
Winter average maximum and minimum temperatures
- December – Max 56.9°F, Min 39.6°F
- January – Max 58.5°F, Min 40.5°F
- February – Max 62.9°F, Min 44.1°F
What to Wear on The Strip
When you’re out on the Strip, casual clothes are the order of the day. As we’ve just seen, the time of year will dictate exactly what you wear, but as a general rule, when out on the Las Vegas Strip, wear what you’re comfortable in.
During the day, most people don’t dress up too much, but in the evenings, people tend to make more of an effort.
The only thing to bear in mind is that you should wear more formal clothes in the evening if you’re planning on heading to an upmarket restaurant, one of the Strip casinos or a nightclub – but we’ll talk about these in more detail in just a moment.
What to Wear on Fremont Street
Fremont Street has become an exciting and lively part of town and now boasts a whole range of lively new bars that are great fun to hang out in.
In general, what you’ll want to wear in that part of town is more or less the same as on the Strip – but if anything, it’s even more casual.
What to Wear in The Casinos
During the day, the casinos don’t have strict dress codes, so you can wear more or less the same things as you would when out on the Strip. That means in most places, you’ll be fine in a pair of shorts and a t-shirt or a similar level of attire.
At the same time, bear in mind that if you try to go in wearing a tank top (for men), flip-flops or anything old or tatty-looking, it will be frowned upon and you may be asked to leave. In other words, use your common sense.
In the evenings, on the other hand, the casinos are more formal. This means for men, slacks, a button-down shirt and dress shoes are the minimum – although you’re not expected to go in dressed like James Bond in a tuxedo!
For ladies, semi-formal or formal wear is acceptable, so you should be thinking about clothing such as cocktail dresses, smart slacks with a blouse or something similar.
What to Wear in Upmarket Restaurants
The dress code in smart restaurants in Vegas is the same as anywhere else in the country – and is broadly the same as in the casinos.
This means for men, slacks and a shirt with dress shoes is ideal, and for ladies, an evening dress or slacks with a blouse will be perfect.
Again, use your common sense – don’t expect to be allowed into an exclusive restaurant if you turn up wearing shorts and flip-flops.
What to Wear if You Go Clubbing
If you want to go clubbing in Vegas, you’ll need to pay attention to what you wear. Many clubs, especially the biggest and most famous, have very specific dress codes, and if you aren’t properly dressed, you won’t be allowed in.
For example, clubs such as Hakkasan, Omnia or Jewel expect you to wear upscale fashionable attire. For men, this means a collared shirt and shoes, although, for ladies, the dress code is more open to interpretation.
For men, jeans are usually allowed – but not ripped or baggy jeans. However, shorts are usually not allowed, and you won’t get in wearing sneakers, flip-flops or sandals (ladies can wear sandals with backs).
Sportswear and baggy or ripped clothing are not allowed in the big clubs, you can’t wear a hat, and boots with steel toes or work-style boots are also not permitted.
However, since the dress code varies from club to club – and even from night to night – the best advice is to check the details on the website of the club you are going to.
That way, you can find out exactly what you can and can’t wear, helping you avoid the disappointment of being turned away at the door.
Also, make sure you check the website for details about the kinds of accessories you’re allowed to take in with you.
What to Wear at The Pool
While you are at the pool in the resorts, regular swimwear is fine. However, in some pools, especially family pools, swimwear that is deemed too revealing may not be acceptable, and you may be asked to cover up.
However, at adults-only pools, the rules about this are more relaxed.
At the same time, while walking between your room and the pool, you are expected to cover up – so don’t plan on traipsing through the hotel lobby just wearing your swim shorts or bikini.
What to Wear at A Pool Party
Vegas is renowned for its lively pool parties, so what should you wear when you attend one?
In general, the acceptable attire for a pool party is swimwear. If you are attending a pool party, arrive in your swimwear – but covered up, just as you normally would when walking to or from your room.
At the same time, pool parties are a place to be seen, so most people wear the most stylish swimwear they can find.
Lots of ladies also like to wear some makeup – although, you might want to consider how much time you’ll be spending in the water and try to balance looking great with what’s practical.
Vegas Outfits Tips
- Bring sunscreen
Due to the high temperatures during the hottest months of the year, as well as the right clothing, you also need to remember to pack sunscreen – since without it, you can burn quickly.
- Bring a hat
Similarly, if you’re planning to spend any amount of time outside during the day in summer, you’ll also need a hat to keep the sun off your head whenever you’re walking anywhere.
- Expect to walk a lot
Although you might not realize before you go, when you get to Vegas, you’ll probably find you do quite a bit of walking.
For this reason, make sure the shoes you bring are comfortable and won’t give you blisters if you spend lots of time walking in them.
- In summer, it’s colder indoors
Since in summer, most places have their air conditioning at full blast, you’ll usually find it’s much colder when you’re indoors than when you’re outside.
This means you should at least carry some kind of light top to throw on when you go inside to keep you warm.
This is especially important if you’re going to be inside more than outside – but also if you’re going to be going in and out of buildings frequently since the constant change of temperature can easily make you sick.
- Check the dress code for the particular club you’re going to
In Vegas, most of the clubs have dress codes, and lots of them are quite similar.
However, if you don’t want to be turned away at the door because you’re not wearing the right attire, make sure you check the dress code beforehand for the specific club you’re planning to visit to avoid disappointment.
- Always wear something you feel comfortable in
Although everyone wants to look their best, you should always make sure you feel comfortable in the outfit you choose because this way, you will have more fun.
Conversely, don’t feel pressurized to wear something that you feel uncomfortable in physically or something you feel self-conscious in because if you do, you will constantly be thinking about your clothes and not focusing on making the most of your time in Vegas!
